The ups and downs of farming

We had a heifer due to calve - out with her mates, all just beginning to nibble the grass that is possibly growing. She took herself off and hid away in the bushes on the top ground. I managed to get her in with all the rest yesterday morning. We watched her closely, heifers are always a worry at their first calving. Nothing much seemed to be happening. Brian could feel a head but no feet. I contacted the vet who sounded to be up to his eyes in sheep. In the meantime Brian managed to get the bull calf out. His heart was beating rapidly, but despite Brian's best efforts he died. The heifer licked and licked him - such are the dramas and little heartbreaks of farming. At least the heifer seems OK.
